Ancient Greek Silver Coin

Ancient Greek Silver Coin

Ancient Greek Silver Coin
A hand-struck silver coin dating back to the third century B.C.

About 2,200 years ago in the third century B.C., skilled craftsmen in the ancient Greek city of Histiaea produced a small treasury of silver coins by striking hand-made dies with a heavy hammer. The ancient silver Tetrobol coins portrayed the city’s traditional symbol of a sea nymph, and celebrated its prosperity as a wine producer and a flourishing commercial seaport.

Located on one of the largest Greek islands, Histiaea controlled a fertile coastal plain. The coins were most likely used in trade throughout ancient Greece and across the Mediterranean.

Most were worn out or destroyed thousands of years ago, so the few that remain are guarded in museums and private collections. But now, you can own one of these fascinating ancient coins, available exclusively from PCS Stamps & Coins.
